Proactive Website

I came across this very creative website idea used by developers of The Glass House of Denver. Here's what they did.
  1. They placed a site sign at the construction site directing people to a website (not the one that exists now).
  2. At that site, they ran a short slideshow of what some would call benefit pictures - no renderings of a pool, just a guy sitting by a pool.
  3. Once the slideshow ended, they offered people a chance to "get on the list" for more information.
  4. When they had permission from these people, they began updating them on their progress once a month, including revealing in more detail each feature of the building.
  5. By the time they began the next step, over 5,000 people had signed up (85% saying they were recommended by a friend.)
  6. About 500 of those people had come by the office and REALLY expressed interest/granted permission.
  7. They hosted about 45 parties for those people, about 15 at a time, at a restaurant in the neighborhood. They brought no collateral. No models. Instead, they just spent time with them. Answered their questions. Filled them in on the details that mattered to them.
  8. They then created a private website for those people who had expressed interest answering the most common questions they had heard at the parties.
  9. From there, using a system that met some pretty stringent real estate law requirements, they offered those people who had expressed the most interest in Glass House an opportunity to purchase.
  10. Upon moving the first people in they completely bought out - 389 residences before the completion of construction in a market that is decidedly not booming.
It all added up to about $140 mm in revenue.

After reading about Glass House I couldn't help but think that there has to be a way we can use our church website to be a more effective tool in reaching out to those who don't know the Lord. My mind is full of ideas. I hope this example spurs you on as well. Don't stop dreaming.

Video Illustrations

We all know that there are times when a short video clip can help make a point in your message more clear, relevant and applicable. Bluefish TV is a great place to find some good, short and inexpensive video illustrations. Check it out, but remember that when it comes to using video in a message "less is more".

Maintaining A Cultural Connection

So what does business have in common with the church? The answer to that question depends on whom you ask. It seems to me that business trends follow cultural trends. One of the more difficult things I face as someone employed in full-time ministry is maintaining a healthy connection with culture. FastCompany Magazine is a business magazine that I have found to be helpful in my endeavor to connect with culture. Check out their archives for issues dating back to 2004. As is always the case, some of the information is enlightening and some is not, therefore be a discerning reader. Let me know what you think.

Here's some helpful information from Andy Stanley called Practically Speaking. These seven podcast messages, based on his book 7 Habits of Effective Ministry are full of leadership insights that will help you become a more effective leader. Let me know what you think.

Diving In

It seems like I spend a good bit of time these days emailing my coworkers and friends information that may be helpful to them. To aleviate this problem somewhat I thought the timing might be right to enter the blog world. We'll see how it all works.
